Evolving from a journey through parts of Indonesia, the film assembles a number of day-to-day activities in which the filmmaker was personally involved: e.g. the acrobatic harvesting of coconuts, traditional greeting gestures, intimate collective processing of bull meat, balancing meals for lunch that are traded in the street, the rhythmical operating of a weaving mill.
The viewer is drawn into an atmosphere that is not yet shaped by industrial and post-industrial scenarios. All actions more or less brave the elimination by so-called progress, guiding principles and trends. A young generation encounters the rites of an older generation. Some of the protagonists evade the camera with emancipatory dignity.
As ritual dances are staged on fictitious conditions for the filmmaker the activities disconnect from everyday life and the guidelines of interpretation blur. The thirteen episodes oscillate between wary documentation in a Direct Cinema-style and the keen imagination of a visiting foreigner.
